7 Keys to a More Consistent Quiet Time

Ladies, do you find yourselves sruggling to be consistent in your quiet times with the Lord?

With a million distractions and responsibilities tugging on us daily, it can be a challenge.

That’s why I want to share with you 7 Keys that I’ve found help me spend time with Jesus more consistently.

“For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him? And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?

Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.”

Deuteronomy 4:7-9
(NKJV)emphasis added

As humans, we are a forgetful bunch. That’s why we need to remind ourselves of the beauty of a life in and with Christ.

So, the first 2 keys have to do with remembering…remembering why & Who.

#1. Remember Why

…the Lord answered her…
“One thing is necessary”…

Luke 10:42

In this passage, Jesus was referring to sitting at His feet and spending time with Him.

It’s the one thing Jesus says is necessary for us. Yet, it seems it’s the 1 thing for which we have the least amount of time.

But if Jesus thinks it’s necessary, so should I.

And that’s why we must begin with changing our mindset. Our actions always follow our thoughts. So if we want to change what we’re doing, the first step is to renew our minds.

(Just a few) Reasons why Spending Time with Jesus is Necessary:

  • Scripture is the main way we can get to know the character and person of God. ❤️
  • God’s Word revealed in the Bible is a gift. (Deuteronomy 29:29)
  • Apart from Him, we can do nothing. (John 15:5)
  • We’re in an ongoing spiritual battle and our 1 offensive weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Prayer is also part of a Christian’s armor. (Ephesians 6:12-13, 18)
  • The Word gives us life, makes us wise, revives our souls, comforts, teaches, strengthens, cleanses and encourages us. (Psalm 119)
  • Our heart is deceitful “above all else”. Spending time with Jesus in His Word and prayer helps us discern the lies from His Truth. (Jeremiah 17:9-10)
  • We find peace for our minds, hearts and souls in His presence. (Isaiah 26:3)
  • It is the sweetness in this life. (Psalm 119:103)
  • It’s the key to true success and prosperity—(not so much speaking about earthly treasures!) (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1)

#2. Remember Who

Thus says the Lord, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool…for all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist…” Isaiah 66:1-2, NKJV

Imagine you receive a beautiful invitation from a president or a king. He has invited you to join him in his royal throne room for a feast so you can get to know him better personally.

Even more, he is going to pay all the expenses for you to come spend time with him. All you have to do is make the trip to sit at his table.

What would be your response?

I imagine we’d feel honored to receive such a special invitation. We’d probably go shopping for just the right outfit to wear. We might even take some etiquette classes to prepare.

And we definitely wouldn’t arrive empty handed before him. Rather we’d seek to present him with a gift worthy of a king.

Dear ladies, the fact is each one of us has received such an invitation. Not from simply a mortal, earthly ruler, but from the Most High King, Maker of Heaven and of Earth…

..The King who is love, whose reign will never end, who sits enthroned above the circle of the earth. The one who forms light and creates darkness, knows the beginning from the end…the King of kings, Who is returning soon.

The only king who has paid the ultimate price for us to be able to come into His presence.

His name is Jesus.

Jesus’ last words on the cross were, “It is finished.”

Every cost necessary to be reconciled with God, forgiven of our sins and know Him personally, had and has been paid in full.

The King of kings paid mine and your debt for the sins we have committed.

What gift could we possibly present to Him that will be accepted & never despised?

For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart
These, O God, You will not despise.

Psalm 51:15-17
(NKJV) Emphasis added

The question that remains is, “Will we come to His table and feast with Him?

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need

Hebrews 4:16, NKJV

#3. Be Willing to Let Some Things Go

Set aside the computer, make the bed a little later, and go enjoy some time with Jesus.

Responsibilities, work, ministry, etc. will always be waiting for us. The truth is they’re not linear tasks, but more like never-ending circular ones.

Have you ever finished washing dishes, just to have another dirty one show up in the sink? Then, you know what I mean! 😆

If we wait until there are no more tasks at hand to spend time with the Lord, it will never happen.

No matter what social media screams at us women—we cannot do it all.

No one does.

We simply choose what is most important and put that on our agenda.

Everyone’s TO-DO list is a little different and can change depending on the day.

The only TO-DO list for us that never changes is Jesus’.

Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)

So take a breather, the dishes and everything else can wait. It’s okay. Enjoy spending time with the Lord today.

#4. Get Up Earlier

It doesn’t matter at what hour you wake up.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a morning person or a night owl.

We all can agree that waking up, even 15 minutes earlier, makes the day stretch further.

And, it allows more time than you currently have for focusing on what’s most needed in your life.

So I encourage you to change your alarm, even if it’s only 15 minutes earlier, so you can have more time in your day to spend with Jesus.

Have probs waking up in the morning? Me too! I’ve learned the secret to getting rid of those morning blues begins the night before.

#5. Make a Date

Have you ever talked with family or friends about getting together but it seems to never happen—despite your best intentions and desires?

Most of the time it’s because we don’t choose a date.

I’ve noticed simply deciding on a specific time to get together with others is what really makes it happen.

Writing it down in our agendas also helps it not slip our minds.

Spending time with the Lord is no different.

So I encourage you to make a date today. [Find tips for choosing a quiet time here!]

#6. Ask for God’s Help

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,”
Says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)

In various posts, I’ve shared this Scripture. But it’s worth repeating again.

Why?

Because we are told if we want to do something, we must work up the courage, pull up our own bootstraps, and we only have ourselves to depend on in this world.

A sad, solitary way of thinking that just sets us up for failure.

Our strength is limited & our wisdom little.

When we are struggling, we need someone greater & wiser than us who cares enough to help. And that exactly describes our King, the Lord Almighty & the Only Wise. (Jude 25)

Whether in this moment you’re lacking strength, wisdom, desire or all three, All can be found in God.

For it is God who is at work in you, both to desire and to work for His good pleasure.

Philippians 2:13 (NASB)

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

#7. Simply Choose to Do it!

But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.

Luke 10:42 (NKJV)

The Most High King has sent the invitation, paid all the expenses and waits with loving arms.

He promises to receive all who believe in His name, not just as invited guests, but as His very own children. (John 1:12)

But as many who received Him, He gave them the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His Name…

John 1:12

I can’t help but things of Sovereign Grace’s song “Jesus, thank You!”. Part of the lyrics…

“…By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near
Your enemy You’ve made Your friend
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace
Your mercy and Your kindness know no end…

…Once your enemy, now seated at your table, Jesus thank you!”

May we come accept His invitation daily, choosing what can never been taken away, time spent with the Lord of the Universe.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) emphasis added
